The Body of Christ – by Pam Annen

This has been an awesome experience and one that I thought I would not be equipped for. I have done street evangelism but I knew nothing

Pam – working at the clinic

about soccer.  What was I getting myself into? I’m not even a very sporty person, as my family knows! So when we had our meeting before we left for the mission, I would listen and watch the best I could so I didn’t look dumb. Even falling down and breaking my watch and hurting for a while, I just kept going on, asking God to help me do what I could. Finally, we arrived in Guatemala and the clinic began. I was with Jared who is so patient with me and the kids. I learned a lot about soccer and even participated in some of the games the kids played before the scrimmages. But I kept thinking, “I’m not doing that much and don’t even know if I am of any real help to Jared.” Then I remember in God’s word he tells us in Romans 12:1-4 that we are not to think highly of ourselves and we have many members in one body. We are one body in Christ and we all work together for God’s glory. I was not the only one on the team that was not “sporty” but together we had an awesome outcome. It shows us that together with God’s blessing and in His will, we can do whatever we need.

I also learned to listen to what God is saying. One day before street evangelism, Rick prayed for God to lead us to the people who were searching for the Lord. Stephanie and I were with Rodrigo (Curly) and I started witnessing to two women. The answer I got to La Gran Pregunta was there is no Hell. Well, I looked to Curly and said “Help”. I had no scripture in my mind to answer her with. Curly talked to her for a while and she would talk to him, all the while I was racking my brain for scripture. When the conversation ended and the women walked away, Curly told me what they said. When Jesus comes, then there will be Hell and there is no one in Heaven right now except God and Jesus. Dead people are just in the grave and when Jesus comes, God will decide who goes to Heaven or Hell. Then I remembered certain scripture like the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16, 1 Thessalonians 4. Talking with other team members we came up with other scripture also. What I learned is the reason no scripture came to me was these women were “time wasters” and the Holy Spirit didn’t give me answers because they were not going to accept the gospel.  But now I have the scriptures I need if I need them in the future. Randy and Rick both told us there are people out there that will argue with us and waste time that we could be witnessing to people who are searching for what they need but don’t know what it is. I thank God for the opportunity to come down here to Guatemala to help build God’s church. Praise be to God!

“I’m not a talker” Rick, Randy, name the movie? – by Jared Briles

I have dreamed about going on my first mission trip for a long time… this year it finally came true.  I’ve heard of all the stories that everyone

Jared – street Evangelism

shares, and the amazing experiences that changes people’s lives.  Well, I’m here to say that my first mission trip exceeded my expectations and was nothing short of amazing!  Now to top that off, the trip combined a life changing experience with the sport I love the most and have played all my life….soccer.

What better way to serve the Lord than teaching the most popular sport in the world.  Now the minute we arrived in Guatemala the first thing that you are faced with is the language barrier.  I haven’t practiced my Spanish since high school so it made communicating difficult.  The translators were amazing and that made talking to individuals much easier.  However, once I started talking about soccer the barriers disappeared.  No matter where you live the passion for a sport speaks the same language.  Once that ball hit the field I was like a kid on Christmas!  I got to plant the seed of salvation and share my love for Jesus in many boys and girls lives.  What hit me the hardest was one young twelve year old boy asked for my e-mail address so he could send me the score of the last match, USA- 0 and Guatemala- 1, (they are very competitive in Guatemala and loved to rub it in).  Within 90 minutes of giving him my name and e-mail address I had a friend request on Facebook.  We know that God’s Word will not return void and the few days of the soccer clinic allowed me to establish a relationship with a young boy.

The children asked me why we came down here to host this soccer clinic and I told them because I love Jesus and want to share the gospel.  God allowed me and my family this opportunity and this experience will forever change my life!

Thank you to all the families that sacrificed while their loved ones were away.  Thank you to all of my brothers and sisters on the team for all the support!

Sharing Gospel on Street

Where to start?  I always like to take the opportunity to write the final blog and let you know how the week went.  INCREDIBLE!  Not sure if there is any other word to describe how the week went.  This TEAM just absolutely jelled and pulled together so incredibly.  Let me give you just a quick run down of how our days would go throughout the week.

There was a little problem with the VBS that was going every morning, so we stepped up and supplied VBS with 4 people everyday.  Every team member took at least a day and worked in the VBS, even though that was not our focus.  The team did a great job with that.  Flexibility is always the key to a mission and they did an exceptional job.  The rest of us would go out to a nearby square and share the Gospel with people on the streets.  We made a lot of great contacts, saw a number of people pray to receive Christ.  Probably the best part was that we could look up and point to the East and say, “And that is where the church meets every Sunday at 10″.  We also invited people to the rest of the week’s VBS and soccer clinic.

Every afternoon at about 3:00 we would load into the vans and bus and head over to the “Futeca” (4 miniture fields) where we hold the Futball (Soccer) clinic.  We started the week with a lot of unknowns, and looking back it is incredible that God pulled the thing off.  We had anywhere from 122-130 kids everyday.  The greatest surprise was the fact that a good number of the parents would stay throughout the entire clinic watching their kids learn and play.  We would go everyday from 4-5:20 teaching drills and playing games that put the skills in action.  5:20-5:50 would be Bible half time.  5:50-6:40 would be games on the fields and then at the end, when all the parents were there, we would have a final short message from one of the guys on our team to wrap the whole thing up and preach to the kids and parents.  There were several parents who prayed to receive Christ during the week, but just as important, Nelson Rivas, the pastor here, and other church members were able to build some relationships and invite many lost people to church.  One such man was “Ronny”, who had ridiculed a friend of his for coming to this church that was “brain washing” him.  This man was distant at the beginning of the week, but after seeing the love of people for his children, asking nothing in return, he embraced Nelson, thanking him for the clinic.  This man is an Athiest who became very intrigued with this Christ that was talked about.  There are so many stories to share.  I would encourage you to come to the service on Wednesday, November 30th at 7:00 to hear more and see pictures.  Nelson was so impressed that he was already asking for us to come back next year and hold the clinic in a more affluent area with about three times the size of this Futeca.

Our theme throughout the planning for this week and then throughout the week was the God, not any individual, not Goran, Damon or Jared, be lifted up.  The Bible says in John 12:32 ”And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw allmenunto me.”  That was our prayer and desire, to lift up Jesus Christ, and we tried to do that in all that we did.  I believe for that reason, we saw the results that we did, all for the glory of God.

Last thing, I would like to say a big thank you to all of those here at home.  I know my wife and the other family members were praying fervently for us, and we could sense it.  Thank you to all those who sacrificed in giving to those who were going on the trip and for buying all those breakfast buritos at soccer.  Can’t wait until t-ball to sell them again.  Thanks again, we love you all so much!

Street Evangelism – by Aaron Depee

Street evangelism is something very new to me.  To be honest, before coming down, the thought of talking to perfect strangers about any subject scared me to death.  Monday was my first day of hitting the street to share the gospel with the people.  The first contacts I made on the street were special.  I met two young men on Monday that I was able to share the gospel with and they both prayed to receive Jesus Christ as their Savior!  One was out in front of the bank, shining shoes for money every day, so I was able see him, smile and wave as I passed by.  The other young man came up to me on Friday and shook my hand, WOW that really moved me!  This experience has made me feel like a new person.  The thought of talking to perfect strangers still scares me to death but now I know it is worth it.  The souls of man is worth it!

Obediencia – by Veronica Ramirez

Busy, busy, busy – by Rick Adams

Monday we got to go out for the first time for one-on-one evangelism.  Usually we go down to the central market which is about a 30 minute

Bible half Time

drive.  But in order to save time, we decided to stay closer to the hotel so that we could get back and go over our plan for the soccer clinic.  So we decided to simply go out on the streets around the hotel and do street witnessing. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise.  Not that there is anything wrong with going to the central market but it is so far away that even if we did lead someone to Christ, it would be hard for them to get to the church.  Here on the streets the people live and work close by so we can tell them to come to the church. Also the type of people is more the type of people that Nelson is trying to reach to build his church, they are more professional people.

Austin had to do VBS so I took Josh and we went out with Jonathan as our translator.  Jonathan is a very good translator.  Josh did a very good job and we were able to lead a few people to Christ. We saw some interesting things and met some interesting people.

After much anticipation and hard work it was now time for the main purpose of our trip, the soccer clinic.  No one was sure just how it would go or what would happen.  But because of much prayer things went GREAT!!! We had approximately 122 kids show up.  We had heard that there were 85 registered so that was a blessing.  Damon, Jared, and Goran had put many hours of planning and preparation into this.  Even as late as Monday afternoon they were changing their plans because of the way the fields laid out and how many fields we would have access to.  Nelson, the pastor of the church, and Steve Kern, the missionary didn’t know what to expect because they had never been exposed to this type of ministry.  They were blown away!!! They were very impressed with the turnout as well as how well the clinic was run.  Praise the Lord!!!

First we got all the kids together and went over what we would be doing.  Then we split them up into the different ages.  Today our focus was on “dribbling” so we did drills with them and played games to emphasize dribbling.  After that we sat them down in the middle of the field and gave them water and had a time of sharing the gospel. It is always hard to tell with kids but we had several respond that they prayed the prayer of salvation.  Praise the Lord.  Then we ended the soccer portion with some scrimmages with them.  Then we brought them all together one more time with the parents there as well and shared the gospel so that the parents could hear as well.

We were all very excited to see how well it went and to hear that the leadership was pleased.  But we were all also pretty tired and hungry.  So we came back to the hotel and went out and got something to eat and to share what went good and what went bad.  We felt as though things went well but there were some areas we could improve. Oh yea and we suffered at Tacontento, it was good again.

Building My Fortress – Stephanie Coleman

Saturday evening we went out into a neighborhood to invite the people to watch a movie and share the gospel.  While walking through the neighborhood I noticed that the homes are very well protected.  There are bars on the windows, tall iron gates topped with barbed wire and shards of glass.  My first thought was “why?”  I couldn’t imagine what they had of value or importance to protect that well.  They don’t own all the material possessions that we do in the U.S. that thieves would want to break in and steal.  After talking with Veronica about it she cleared things up a bit.  She said because the wages here are so low, the people truly value what they have.  That paired with the crime being high, the protection is a necessity.  The people here have built their fortress and put their trust in it.  God is really showing me through this that I have something of more value than material possession to protect from someone more powerful than a thief off of the street.  Satan wants nothing more than to destroy my testimony, my family and my life.  After listening to Steve Kern’s message on Sunday, I see and encourage other parents to follow God’s plan in spite of the possible peril, price, or persecution.  Living a sanctified life for God, guarding our hearts from those things that negatively impact our walk, will cost us something.  I am asking all my friends to hold me accountable for how I am guarding my testimony and the influences I am allowing in the lives of my children.

Psalm18:  2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my Salvation, and my high tower.  3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

Renewing Friendships – by Rick Adams

Sunday started with church at Vida Nueva Guatemala. WOW how the church has grown since the last time I was here in 2009.  They run about 95 adults and 30 children now, praise the Lord.  It was encouraging to see some of the same people that I knew from before.  It was also encouraging to meet some people who came to know Christ and joined the church as the result of the VBS we did in 2009.  They are active members in the church today.  The praise music was very good even though I couldn’t understand all of the words, you could just feel the people truly worshiping God during that time.

After the praise, we had a break time for coffee and fellowship.  WHAT A GREAT IDEA PASTOR RICK!!! Then we came back together for the message from Pastor Steve Kern.  God challenged my life in the area of faith.  He said the opposite of faith is fear, so the main reason we don’t have faith is because of fear.  What a great message.

After church we went out to eat with some of the people in the church.  Nelson took us to one of the malls here in Guatemala.  It was nicer than any mall I have been to in the United States.  They had a great food court with a lot of North American food like McDonalds, Quizno’s, Pizza Hut etc. We had a great time of fellowship with the people of the church.

From there some of us went to check out the Futeca which is the soccer fields where we will be having the soccer clinic.  They are AWESOME! There are four fields with field turf, not regulation size but plenty big enough. From there we came back to the hotel to meet with the team and our translators to lay out the plans for how the soccer clinic was going to run.

When we got back to the hotel the translators had arrived from El Salvador and God had a great surprise and answer to prayer for me.  The last couple of times I have come down to Central America I have had a translator by the name of Jonathan.  We have gotten pretty close through the years.  Two weeks ago we were talking on Facebook and he told me that he was going to Costa Rica on a missions trip the week before we came down so he wouldn’t be able to come even though I had been talking to him and asking him to come.  I told him I was going to pray that God would work it out that he could come. And when I got back to the hotel Jonathan was there, he was able to come after all. It was great to see him and all the others as well and re-new our friendships. It reminds me of what Paul said in 1 Thessalonians which we have been studying for this trip, how that he couldn’t wait to see them again.

Jonathan in the middle

Real Madrid or Barcelona by Damon Renzulli

Loving soccer as I do and knowing how popular it is everywhere but in the US, still did not prepare me for the impact this simple sport has on Guatemala. This country eats, breathes, and sleeps soccer, literally. (I was talking to someone down here who says her brother does everything with this soccer ball, eats, sleeps, and um, other things as well.) I see more people wearing their favorite soccer team jerseys than I see people wearing sports jerseys in general in the US. It is absolutely crazy. Which is exactly why God has brought us here.

A very unique opportunity has been presented to us. We have traveled to a foreign land to use a sport that everyone loves as a tool to present the Gospel. There are probably less than a handful of people that have tried this before. If you don’t believe me you can Google  it like I did. ;)

Let me try to explain the beautiful chaos that we have been blessed with before I continue with this post. First, this facility has 4 soccer fields that are smaller than half of a american football field. Typically, they play 4 on a side with a goal keeper, so that is a total of 5 kids on one team which brings us to 10 kids on a field and about 40 kids playing at one time at this facility. As all of you know, God doesn’t usually follow the norm. We had over 120 kids show up one of the nights. That averages to 30 kids per field! I hope you can now somewhat understand how awesome the chaos looks to us.

On Monday night, I had the prvilidge of wrapping things up with a brief gospel message, however, I really needed to get the kids interest. So I asked a very simple question, “How many of you like Real Madrid and how many of you like Barcelona”? One would have thought that I was handing out $100 bills. The kids are nuts about both of these teams and two key players on each team: Messi from Barcelona and Ronaldo from Real Madrid. (A side note, Messi is known as a great all around team soccer player and Ronaldo is known to have great skills but he is very greedy. So many people say down here that the Christans love Barcelona.) I knew I had their interest at that point and was able to hold it for about 2 mins (not much different than our kids). But here I was, a mediocre, has-been, soccer player from Kansas City, Missouri preaching about Jesus at a soccer clinic in Guatemala. This is an answered prayer of mine as I believe Brownie and I have talked about this very scenario for about 6 years now.  All of our group has allowed God to work through them to be at this very spot for this week for a purpose, and I can’t explain what that means to know you are where God wants you to be.

We have had 3 solid days of soccer and preaching and many kids have accepted Jesus through this tool. However, a huge benefit is being realized by the church leaders during the clinic. While kids are playing, their parents are watching, and so the church members are able to establish relationships with the parents! Through God opening up the doors that He did, I truly believe this will be just the first of many opportunities to share this sport with many of the countries in Central America. As each country becomes westernized due to growth and technology and more people more concerned about what is on their iPod or who they are texting with, there will be a constant around the world and that is the love of soccer. I thank the Lord that we were able to be one of the first to do so in Guatemala and I look forward to our next visit to this area.

Just the Right Time by Damon Renzulli

Hola mi hermanos and hermanas. Well we made it down here to Guatemala and Randy has yet to lose one of us. We have had two solid days of the soccer clinic which has been phenomenal, but that is not what I want to talk about. What I want to discuss is the power of prayer. I know many of you have been praying for this trip, for us, and for souls. You will need to trust me that we feel those prayers and God is not returning those prayers void. The first night we went to a neighborhood to invite people to a movie. We were all encouraged to invite and also present the Gospel if at all possible. Jared and I and our interpreter, Daniela who is Nelson’s eldest daughter, met up with an older woman with three children. As I started to talk to her it was very apparent that she was interested in what was being said. Through the presentation of the Gospel we started to see tears in her eyes. As she started to talk, she said, I don’t go outside of my house at all and haven’t for many days. This is the first time that I came out of my house and I believe God put you in my path to tell me what I needed to hear. That in and of itself was enough for me on the first day, what a testimony of all of your prayers! But there is more… At that point she did not want to pray as she was a little overwhelmed. So rather than forcing her, I asked her if she cared if we prayed for her to help her get through the situations that were bothering her. We prayed to the Lord that whatever was bothering her would be fixed and to give her the peace that she desires. We left her with some concern, but we knew we had to move on. About 45 minutes later we were watching the movie and Jared came over to me and told me that the same lady was at the movie with her kids. WHAT A BLESSING AND ANSWERED PRAYER! And to top it off, she made a decision at the end of the movie and Pam was able to work with her. So please, keep praying for us as we still have several days left to serve Him in Guatamala!
